In my web design business, I often hear that veterinarians don’t need a website because word of mouth and Instagram will suffice. I strongly disagree. First, I have never heard of any business that lives on word of mouth, unless they are 100% local and at least 10 years old. While Instagram is an excellent tool for daily communication with your clients, it is an incredibly crowded platform, making it difficult to stand out. And, will you really go to Instagram when looking for a reliable and experienced vet ? I’ll discuss Instagram for your practice in another article.

Whether you run a local vaccination center, exotic animal practice, clinic specializing on allergy in cats, as a business owner, you have many factors to consider for a successful business: staff training, health and safety requirements, location, cleanliness, product quality, prices, and most importantly, how customers find and choose you.

How do people find a new veterinarian?

Marketing surveys show that 82% of people discover a veterinarian through online search and 70% check online reviews, 65% say word of mouth influenced their choice and 30% use social media and online forums to ask for recommendations. Less than 10% will go to the vet just because they have seen a practice on the street or received a card or a flyer. This is a huge shift from the "walk-in " attitude to the carefully researched decision that we see in the last 15 years.

88% of pet owners say a clinic website is important when choosing a vet. A lack of a website sends a message that a practice is too small, can not afford a website (read: not doing so well) , or the information is dated and it simply doesn´t exist anymore.

Is your practice a brand?

Every veterinarian practice needs a brand strategy and reputation to impress its clients. It’s challenging to convey your brand solely through Instagram. Without a brand strategy and identity, you’re just another vet. A website allows you to represent who you are to potential and current clients, increasing brand loyalty and reaching your target demographic.

With so many vets around, customers want more than just a place to get a yearly vaccine. They have questions about side effects of the vaccines, personalised recommendations for the young or old pets, food allergens, opening hours, parking, whether or not you do home or farm visits, and even the type of waiting rooms you have. Do you have a separate quiet spot for the not-so-social pets?

A comprehensive and easily navigable website is a great start to your customers’ experience.

Essential elements to be included in your website

  • Working hours

  • Location with a link to Google Maps

  • Pet food list with ingredients and allergens

  • Ambiance description

  • Online reservations and payment options

  • Online pet food delivery orders

  • Parking information
